Growing up as a Chicana in Central California, a daughter of a Campesino, being a first generation college student and later obtaining my Masters Program while having my first child, I knew my mother’s prayers held me and sustained me in different challenges I have faced. Ever since I was little, my mother demonstrated how vision and prayer were a big part of our life. Later in my own spiritual path, I have come to recognize prayer in different modalities and manifestation through my travels.
For me, the Virgen de Guadalupe or Tonantzin was La Senora, a patron saint I felt deeply connected to in my upbringing. She holds a special place in our community murals, in our history, in our campesino movement, among many other social justice movements.
Later, I knew this was much deeper. It was part of my Indigenous Roots, the Mesoamerican Energy of Tonantzin, Mother Earth, Madre Tierra. Tonantzin, has been a central part of our collective memory, cultural fabric, and the elasticity in our collective care. Today in my role as a storyteller, inspired by ancestral memory and the energy of Tonantzin, I’ve chosen to start a project that reflects the resilience, the movements, the female present in the frontlines holding our communities together.
